Community Engagement Transforms Housing

In December, they told their stories cautiously, anonymously, to university students in the compelling video. “If you could hear our voices, would we matter?”, describing the deteriorating physical conditions and negligent landlord response. But well-founded fear of retaliation and of being displaced from their homes had silenced most complaints.

Good health starts long before patients get to the clinic doors. The growing prevalence of chronic diseases calls for a new way of delivering care, one in which healthcare organizations can contribute to improvements in the environment and social conditions that support good health. Supporting collaboration between primary care providers and community-based organizations working to prevent disease is one way to move towards the common goal of improving population health. 

Collaborative Cottage Grove’s Community-Centered Health program is committed to the transformation of health, equitable community development, and inclusion of cultural diversity. The partners are leaders in changing housing systems to align health and housing. 

The Greensboro Housing Coalition was founded 27 years ago to advocate for fair, safe, decent, and affordable housing for low- to moderate-income individuals. We advocate in 4 primary service areas: foreclosure prevention/homeowner counseling, homelessness prevention/ rental housing counseling, healthy homes, and our Community Centered Health Initiative.
